Review: Pokémon Yellow
Originally released in Japan on September 12, 1998 Pokémon Yellow: Special Pikachu Edition is an “Enhanced” version of Pokémon Red and Blue(Green in JP). Pokémon Yellow follows more or less the same story as Red and Blue. The main difference is that the story takes a more anime like approach. This means that you start with Pikachu as your starter and your Rival gets an Eevee. As you travel through the region you will meet three Non Player Characters or NPCs who will each give you one of the traditional starters of the Kanto region. Though to receive these Pokémon you will need to have a specific friendship level obtained with your Pikachu. In addition to starting off with Pikachu and receiving all three starters, some movesets have been updating. Charizard the final evolution of Charmander now can learn the Hidden Machine Fly for example. You also encounter Jessie and James of Team Rocket from the anime this time around. Throughout the multiple encounters you have with them they will use the same Pokémon that were used in the original Kanto Arc of the anime. This includes Meowth who sadly does not speak in human languages in the game. Meowth is the only one who does not evolve from their team. This game includes a one-off minigame called Pikachu’s Beach. In this minigame players with a Pikachu that knows the Hidden Machine Surf can play a mingame with it where Pikachu surfs on waves and you can get points. The points are based on the number of flips you can perform off of a wave. Players will need to be careful as crashing will cause you to lose points. As with Red and Blue this game has graphics that were amazing for it’s time and is still very much playable to thsi day. Those who want to play this game can find it on the Nintendo 3DS eShop for $10.
